Number 6: Thai soup with chicken, coconut milk, Thai ginger, tomatoes, button mushrooms, lemon grass and lemon leaves (hot). On a typical evening, anywhere in Europe, you walk into your local Thai/Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant, and the whole world is there. Everyone connected to everyone else, through this one place. . . The Golden Dragon is a funny and theatrical fable of modern life and migration, whisking you from your local takeaway to East Asia and back, revealing what really goes into that bowl of spicy soup. Are you hungry yet?

Synopsis:

Two illegal dock workers witness a woman drowning. Afraid of involving the police, they do not save her. Guilty or innocent? A nocturnal city teams with social rejects, lost and disaffected human beings: an undertaker; a blind pole dancer; an embittered philosopher; the mother of a serial killer. Loosely connected stories from the edge of society mysteriously interweave to create a lyrical and darkly comic passion play for our times. Disturbing, poignant but ultimately hopeful, Innocence asks unanswerable questions about conscience and compassion in a disfigured world.

Jeff Koons is a wonderfully playful assemblage of language, rhythmic and hypnotic, comic and profound. It travels from the nightclub to the bedroom to the artist's studio to the street and beyond. It's full of arresting contradictions; about being in the crowd and being alone, about casual sex and enduring love and about making something simple that has a lasting meaning. Ultimately, for me, it's about making connections, how we reach one another, get through to each other, or not, whether through sex or love or art or commerce or noise or silence or whatever.

Synopsis:

War meets art in this intimate parable. Lucy Ellinson performs this one woman show, the first full UK production of a work by Dea Loher. She takes the role of a painter seeking the perfect artistic image, until experiencing the horrors of war leads her to reconsider the value of any artistic activity, as well as the awkward relationship of Western preconceptions with current Eastern war zones. In the end she can only ask: what about joy? Land Without Words is a work of poetic realism, drawing on interviews with the abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, and Loher's own reflections about her experiences of Kabul.

State of Emergency

Despite echoes of Harold Pinter, Caryl Churchill and overwhelmingly 1984, State of Emergency has all of the hallmarks of a German existentialist dirge. It shows a family in the deepest dystopian depression during some post-apocalyptic, totalitarian era.

An employee in a leading consulting firm, Niemand's inability to operate 'outside the box' is confirmed by his unconvincing rendition of highlights from The Lion King at the firm's Christmas party. Now unemployed, Paul Niemand simply ceases to exist. Under Ice rips into the slick and systematic world of global corporate absurdities; where spin-doctors spin out of control and human emotion, reason and life are redundant.
