Trav S.D. is best known for his book about the history of vaudeville: No Applause, Just Throw Money: The Book That Made Vaudeville Famous (Faber & Faber, 2005). He began his professional theatrical life as a teenager, performing as a stand-up comedian in Rhode Island . Trained at the Trinity Rep Conservatory in Providence , he began directing, producing and acting in his own plays in the late 1980s. In New York , his plays and performance pieces have been performed at Joe's Pub, LaMama, Theatre for the New City , the Ohio Theater, HERE, Chashama, Dixon Place , the Brick Theatre, Surf Reality, and the NYC International Fringe Festival. Regionally, his work has been produced in Austin , Minneapolis , Portland , Providence and Philadelphia . As a free-lance journalist and critic, he has written for such publications as American Theatre, the Village Voice, Time Out NY , the NY Sun, Reason and nytheatre.com (where he has a monthly podcast). Since 1996, he has presented hundreds of variety acts through his American Vaudeville and Burlesque Theater.
