Al graduated from Edinburgh University in June 2005 with a degree in English Literature. Whilst at university, he directed several plays for the Edinburgh University Theatre Company, including Harold Pinter's Ashes to Ashes and The Dumb Waiter, performed in The Trial, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Green Forms, Macbeth, Arsenic and Old Lace, A Small Family Business, The Best We've Ever Had, and performed regularly with the Bedlam Improverts. On a year exchange at the University of California Santa Barbara, he preformed in Much Ado About Nothing. At the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 03, he performed in Darklight's Sexual Perversity in Chicago, and The Improverts (Fringes 03 - 05). With the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, he performed in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (parts one and two) at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith and subsequent tour to the Lowry Centre, Manchester. In 2004, he directed Tom Allen's Train Ride for the National Youth Theatre. In February 2005, he wrote and directed Chalk which was performed by the EUTC. For the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2005, he wrote, directed and appeared in Enola which won the Three Weeks Editors Award and has made official selection to the 2006 National Student Drama Festival. He is currently writing The Apollo Trilogy; Part One Under A Red Moon for the National Youth Theatre, which is to be performed at the Soho Theatre, London, in August 2006; Part Two The Astronaut Wives Club has been shortlisted for the Old Vic New Voices Award 2006; and Part Three Radio which will premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2006. In April 2006, he won the Sunday Times Playwrighting Award for Enola. He currently lives and works in London
