| Synopsis: | Adapted from the 1884 novel by Geoge Du Maurier, Trilby, actually predates The Phantom of the Opera (1911), thought the stories are not so far removed. Trilby O'Ferrall is a free-spirited robust young artist's model and singer in Paris. The naive Trilby has fallen hard for the well-bred English artist Billy Bagot. And Billy, his travelling companion Taffy and a street musician, Svengali, all desire her. She consents to marry the handsome Billy; but this plan is foiled by Billy's snobbish mother and uncle. A broken-hearted Trilby seeks refuge with Svengali, which is were the plot really takes off. At first, Svengali uses his hypnotic skills to ostensibly cure migraine headaches, but later he transforms her into a fabulous concert soprano and tremendous success and fame follow. But Trilby becomes a soul possessed ; while she is in a trance world she maintains her fame but cannot love. This is the tragic flaw in the evil Svengali's plan. At last when Trilby is freed from Svengali's influence the release is so great it destroys them both. | |||||
