Stephen was born in Liverpool in 1966, and grew up in Huyton, just outside the city. He studied classics at Oxford, where he started writing plays. He lives in London with his wife Rebecca and their two sons. In November 2005 he founded The Miniaturists, an ongoing series of short play events.
