Poile Sengupta is one of India's foremost playwrights in English. Her first full length play, Mangalam, was written in 1993 and produced the next year. Her other plays include Inner Laws,(1994), A Pretty Business (1995), Keats was a Tuber (1996), Collages (1998), Samara's Song(1999) and Alipha and Shoorpanakha and Shakuni (2001) - two companion pieces which opened the Explocity theatre festival in Bangalore in 2001. Alipha was performed later that year at AAkka@, the national level women's theatre festival of Rangayana, Mysore. A humorous look at golf, a one act Sliced Balls, was written in 2002. Mangalam won a special award for its social relevance at The Hindu-Madras Players playscripts competition in 1993. It finds place in Body Blows, an anthology of plays by three women playwrights from India published by Seagull Publishers, Kolkata. Keats was a Tuber was shortlisted and received a special mention at the 1996 British Council International New Playwriting Competition. Her plays have been performed in Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and other Indian cities, as also in South Africa. In 1999-2000, Sengupta received a senior fellowship of the Government of India to specially write plays for children in English. The result was seven plays for children, including one full length musical Yavamajakka! The one Act plays are being published by Puffin. Poile Sengupta is also a well known writer for children. In 1968, she began AA Letter to You@, a humour column for the children's magazine, Children's World - letters from a ten year old boy Perky. The column ran for nearly three decades. Sengupta has written several books for children, and has been extensively anthologised.. Her books include The Exquisite Balance, The Way to My Friend's House, Story of the Road, How the Path Grew - all from CBT and Waterflowers published by Scholastic. Her recent work includes Role Call and Role Call Again, 2003, by Rupa and Co., and Vikram and Vetal, 2005, Good Heavens! - a book of one Act plays - 2006 and Vikramaditya's Throne 2007 from Puffin. . Her stories are also in important anthologies like The Puffin Treasury of Modern Indian Stories, and The Puffin Book of Funny Stories as also Sorry, Best Friend and One World, both from Tulika, and The Best of Target, a selection from the children's magazine of the India Today group, now no longer published. Role Call has been translated and published in Bhasa Indonesia. Poile Sengupta is a well known stage and film actor in Bangalore.
