Thyestes

A faithful and uncut translation from the Latin. The brothers, Atreus and Thyestes rule jointly. Thyestes has had an affair with Atreus' wife and has been banished with his sons. But Atreus wants revenge. He makes friends with his brother but this is just to lure his nephews into his clutches. The unfortunate youngsters are roasted and served up as a stew for their father. "In spite of the powerful performances and the master theatrical craft, I am left with the question, "Why this play?" My tolerance for this sort of intellectually snobbish theatre is greater than most people's, but I cannot imagine why (director Joan) Akalaitis would put such resources into this play" Randy Hardwick, chicagocritic.com

Thyestes

If you mess with the Ancient Greeks, beware a little blood. In the charnel house of Greek legend one room is forever reserved for that most ferocious of tales - Thyestes, the deposed king whose sons were slaughtered and served as a feast to their unwitting father. Treating mythological atrocity as contemporary reality, fast-track director Simon Stone retells this Greco-Roman epic as a series of domestic scenes exploring the mundanity of violence. Terrifyingly observed, savagely comic and ultimately heartrending, Thyestes is a modern journey through the darkest of legends.

Synopsis:

Thyestes is an adaptation of Seneca's great tragedy. Atreus, ruler of Argos, is tortured by a desire for revenge against his brother Thyestes, who not only stole the crown they were supposed to share, but also slept with his wife, Aerope. Having successfully driven Thyestes into hiding, Atreus hatches a wicked scheme to pay his brother back. Feigning forgiveness, he invites Thyestes and his two daughters back to the palace, where he mercilessly slaughters the girls and, and a disturbing public banquet, feeds their flesh to their unwitting father.
