| Synopsis: | As Best Friend opens, Carolyn has just returned from her vacation, expecting to resume her former relationship with her best friend, Anita. She is obviously terribly lonely and attempts to keep her woman taxicab driver, who has brought up her luggage, with her for as long as possible. She offers her a beer, then invites her to return for dinner in the near future and dwells upon her famous friends, with whom she is shown in photographs on her apartment walls. Clearly, she cannot bear to be alone. In the words of one of Tennessee Williams's most celebrated heroines, she has always depended upon "the kindness of strangers." When Anita appears, it is to announce that she is about to marry a man from Indiana whom she met during Carolyn's absence. Then she returns to her nextdoor apartment to dress for his arrival, providing Carolyn with the op. portunity to attempt to destroy the romance and thus to keep her "best friend." She strongly suggests to John that Anita is a lesbian. Believing her, he leaves for the bus station to return home alone. John does, however, return and Carolyn, who has been on the brink of a breakdown throughout the evening, loses her fragile hold on reality when Anita leaves with him. She is at the telephone, propositioning the woman taxidriver as the play ends. | |||||
