Actor Corin Redgrave has died in hospital at the age of 70. The son of Sir Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, brother of Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave, uncle of Joely and Natasha Richardson, and father of Jemma Redgrave, he was part of Britain's most well-known theatrical dynasty. In the early years of his career he was possibly better known as a political activist and member of the Workers' Revolutionary Party than as an actor, unlike his sister Vanessa who shared the same views but who somehow managed to keep the two sides of her life separate. His acting career began in 1961, appearing as Lysander in Tony Richardson's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, followed by playing the Pilot Officer in Chips with Everything in the West End and on Broadway. In 1971 he joined the RSC, playing Octavius in Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra, and Antipholus of Ephesus in The Comedy of Errors. His first major film role was as William Roper in A Man for All Seasons (1966), although the film for which he is probably best known to the general public was Four Weddings and a Funeral. However his career only really flowered in the 1990s when he began to take leading roles. In 1998 he was nominated for an Evening Standard Award, and, the following year, was nominated for Outer Critic's Circle, Drama Desk and Tony awards for playing Boss Whalen in Trevor Nunn's production of Tennessee Williams's Not About Nightingales at the National and on Broadway, a "lost" play which he and sister Vanessa discovered and produced. In 2004 he received rave reviews for his performance as Lear for the RSC and for his one-man show about Kenneth Tynan. His final stage appearance was in Trumbo at Jermyn Street in 2009. He suffered health problems from 2000 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and suffered a major heart attack (while addressing a public meeting) in 2005.
