Gail Phaneuf began writing while earning a master's degree in Theater Education at Emerson College in Boston . Since then, she has penned a number of plays, both long and short, several of which have made their debut in Boston area productions, festivals and readings. Her comic musical MONSTERS! -- a collaboration with composer and longtime friend Ernie Lijoi -- was chosen as a 2005 finalist for the Rod Parker Playwriting Competition, which paved the way for developmental readings in Boston and New York City . The work, three years in the making, was the subject of Gail's master's thesis, and was first produced at Centastage in Boston , MA in September of 2006. Gail is a member of the Dramatists Guild, and an Executive Board member of The Playwrights' Platform in Waltham , MA , where several of her plays have been introduced. Her prickly URBAN GARDENS won an Audience Choice award at the group's 32nd Annual Summer Festival in 2004 a show in which she also performed. Gail's edgy political play RANDOM SELECTION was well received at the 2004 Boston Theater Marathon, having previously been staged at the Provincetown Theatre Company's 2004 Spring Playwrights' Festival. Random Selection was also produced at Curry College in a collection of short plays called War Games. In May of 2006 RANDOM SELECTION was published in Flemish in a collection of short plays by Boston playwrights.

Notes:

The Love Note is a musical set in a middle school. The cast may be comprised of age-appropriate actors or it can be cast with older actors playing younger. There is only one "adult" role - that is the role of the Lunch Lady.

Synopsis:

How do you navigate the perils of youth and move from being sheltered to self-assured? On the brink of growing up, Jessie is determined to make sense of a new and different place with the help of her own imaginary friend Airy. The Love Note allows us to glimpse into a world of tweens where adults dare not meddle. Only the observant and unassuming Lunch Lady is on hand to occasionally "clean up the mess". The Love Note is a soaring new musical that follows Jessie as she and Airy struggle to make sense of a new world where there are weird and wacky "Bookworms", a cute boy named Peter, and the bullies run the school and the lunch period. Although Jessie is not sure what to do when the head bully Brittany descends upon her and tricks her out of her delicious lunch, she still finds strength in the tiny pink love note that her mother tucks into her lunch bag each day. Bolstered by her ever- growing hunger, and daily advice from her colorful and jovial friend Airy, Jessie finally decides to take lunch preparation into her own hands.

Synopsis:

On her 40th birthday, Samantha wakes up to some shocking visitors and has to face the demons of middle age in what unfolds as a hilarious romp of a day. Determined to strike out on an adventure and overhaul her life, Samantha must deflect her mother's warnings amid her mid-life soul searching, and battle a troupe of monsters: Apathy, Fear and Body. Full panic sets in as the monsters take Samantha on a wild ride through her psyche. Then a youthful Birthday Singer appears unannounced, challenging Samantha to banish her demons and live out her dreams. Charged with energetic music and side-splitting lyrics, MONSTERS is a story that captures the universal humor, insight and agony spurred by life's milestones. In the end, MONSTERS asks: Have you faced your demons? We can't necessarily destroy them, but we can laugh at them. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, My giant follows me wherever I go. Indeed.
