MICHAEL MULVIHILL   (1918 - 1991)

Nationality:   Irish    Email:   Click here to contact    Website:   n/a

Literary Agent:  n/a

I was pleased to see that your website includes an entry about my father's play A Sunset Touch by Michael Mulvihill, which was first produced as a radio play on Radio Telefis Eireann, and went on to be an Abbey production in November 1963. However, although he was born in London, he was never British, and would be mortified by this mistake in your record. He was a proud Irishman and named in honour of an uncle (also Michael Mulvihill) who died in the GPO during the Easter Rising of 1916, which eventually led to Ireland's independence. My father was born in 1918 and died in 1991. His most successful play takes place in the tuberculosis ward of a Dublin hospital. The main characters are 6 male patients in various states of recovery and decline, and the medical personnel (female nurses and male doctors!). Pending the rebuilding and enlargement of the Abbey Theatre building, the Abbey Theatre was playing at the Queen's Theatre and I can remember that the assassination of JFK had a terrible effect on takings because the whole of Dublin went into mourning. A Sunset Touch was his only successful play, in terms of production, but he did produce a number of short stories for American magazines and, in the 1980s, he enjoyed some success as a radio raconteur.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Mulvihill (daughter of Michael Mulvihill)
