aka Queenie. Valerie Mason-John (Honorary Doctor of Letters, University of East London) is a British Council Visiting Writer - to Sierra Leone in 2007 and on tour to India in 2008 where she will launch her latest book Broken Voices: Untouchable' Women Speak Out. She is the author of six books and received an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of East London 2007, for her lifetime achievements and contributions (through her writing) to the African Diaspora. She has received many awards: amongst these, the Windrush Achievement Award, Arts and Community Pioneer in 2000, and her debut novel Borrowed Body won the Mind Book of the Year Award 2006. Known for her hit play Sin Dykes, which played sell-out seasons, she has also written The Adventures of Snow Black and Rose Red, You Get Me, and collaborated on other plays.
