Synopsis:

The action takes place at Benedict and Peggy Arnold's home at West Point on September 25, 1780. It is the day of Arnold's defection and escape, and the capture of the British
Agent (in 1981), Major Andre, who had known Peggy Arnold well in Philadelphia. By coincidence, General Washington and his staff arrive that morning for breakfast. Arnold asks Peggy to delay Washington, using every means at her command, so he can escape. She agrees. Washington ar-rives, unaware of Arnold's defection and flight, only to find out later in the day, when his relation-ship with Peggy becomes confused and emotional.

Based on the last three years of the life of Eugene O'Neill. Everyone in the play has real life antecedents, although different names are used. It is about a writer, Garrity, who has reached a stage in life where he is unable to write or function as a man and muses back over his life via flashbacks and other means, to try to discover the reasons for his malaise - principally his relationships with his children, his wives, his parents and brother.
