Lionel Frederick Lonsdale was born on February 5th 1881 in St Helier, Jersey. He was a soldier and then worked for the London and South Western Railway. He tried to get a break through playwriting but this did not come until his wife who was a chorus girl persuaded her employer to read his work. His first success was "The King Of Cadonia" a ruritanian musical. Then after several flops he rewrote "The King of Cadonia" reversing the roles and that became "The Balkan Princess". He wrote the books for many more musicals with varying degrees of success - most successful being "The Maid Of The Mountains". He then turned to writing comedies and had many hits - the most famous being "The Last Of Mrs Cheney". He died on April 4th 1954 from a heart attack.
