Notes:

Original Playwright - Euripides

Synopsis:

Rhesus, the earliest undated extant tragedy of Euripides, is based on events of the Trojan War, as told by Homer in the Tenth Book of the Iliad, the only known tragedy to do this. As a play, Rhesus has captured the imagination of scholars since ancient times. It is so unusual and so unorthodox to ancient dramaturgy, that some consider it a spurious play of the great dramatic poet who, apparently composed it at a very young age. Rhesus relates events that took place in the Trojan camp overnight, that ultimately marked the defeat of the Greek navy and the death of Achilles. The time span during which the plot unfolds is actual and, along with other unique elements that this play employs, such as goddesses having dialog with mortals, an unusual Chorus, and brevity in terms of number of lines, makes it rather unusual for classical repertory and one of Euripi des's most rarely staged tragedies. Using the Richmond Lattimore English translation, this American Thymele Theatre production of Rhesus adheres to four basic elements about ancient theatrical production: It is presented in daylight time, in an amphitheatre setting, without intermission, and free of charge for all.
