Synopsis: | Poet, courtesan, actress, royal mistress: Mary Robinson had a rather more exotic life than her name suggests, and it's told with fitting colour by Penny Dreadful, a company that gives obscure historical characters the devised treatment. Director Mick Barnfather brings to this comic biography all the physical zaniness and invention you would expect of his Complicite and Peepolykus credentials. Mira Dovreni's Mary begins the story with little more than a bundle of rags, pissing in a bucket; in an opium fug, we follow her flashback journey through eighteenth-century celebrity. Whirling us along through an endlessly surprising set -from Mary's schoolroom to her much-frequented boudoir - a comic ensemble create both high society and low, their caricatures as vibrant as their stripy pantaloons, and sing dirty ditties in Mozartian counterpoint. | |||||
