| Synopsis: | Desert Island Dances concerns Houstoun's own relationship to dance and what elements of it she holds precious. Often very beautiful, this piece is in part a reflection on the nature of beauty or at least how beauty is perceived in the world of classical dance. Beginning by pointing a video recorder at the audience and immediately challenging her relationship with them, Houstoun deconstructs the arc of a performance, its necessary peaks and troughs, and the nature of her conversation with the audience. It is a personal and revealing work that exposes her sensitive relationship to dance and subtly reveals her vulnerabilities. This work would sit happily in the context of either dance or theatre programmes. | |||||
