Notes: | Based on the novel by Charles Dickens. Music - Jon Nicholls
Synopsis: | Red Shift's production of Nicholas Nickleby breathes fresh life into Dickens' classic story. Retaining the wit and wisdom of the novel, the production is by turns hilarious and deeply moving. It relocates Nicholas's adventures to Britain in the 1950s; the story-tellers are a spectral ensemble - ghosts of Ralph and Squeers' past victims. This framing gives the story a dramatic drive and a sharp contemporary resonance and rediscovers the punch that made Dickens famous in his time as a serious social commentator as well as a master storyteller.

Notes: | from the novel by Graham Greene
Synopsis: | 1948, Vienna - once the jewel of the European crown - reels from invasion, reduced to a hellish dreamscape of ruins. The city is divided into sectors, each controlled by an Allied power - England, America, France and Russia - and there isn't a Nazi to be found. The war may be over but what follows doesn't feel like peace. In the chaos of liberation, black-marketeers run rings around the occupying forces. Disappearances and murders are commonplace as refugees and members of the old order jockey for position, reinventing themselves with false identities. Naive pulp novelist Rollo Martins arrives in Vienna to meet up with his old school-friend Dr Harry Lime, only to learn that he has been killed in a car accident. As he tries to unravel events around his friend's death, Martins is sucked into a world of corruption where racketeers play god as they traffic in essential drugs and medical supplies. Martins follows a macabre trail of intrigue, violence, and murder relentlessly pursuing the shadowy presence of 'the third man'.

Notes: | from novel D'Entre les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac
Synopsis: | For the final instalment in its trilogy of shows based on the original sources that inspired landmark films (the previous two being 'The Third Man' and 'Get Carter') Red Shift has turned to the classic French crime novel behind Hitchcock's iconic psychological thriller. Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac's 'D'entre les Morts' (1954) juxtaposes the occupation of France by the Nazis with the story of the possession of a man's mind by the idea that the woman he loved has been reincarnated. In Jonathan Holloway's elegant stage adaptation, the tale unfolds as part of a lecture given by French psychiatrist Dr Jacques Ballard. Ballard introduces this case study of 'personal psychosis' before whisking us off in imagination to the sanatorium where his patient Roger Flavières has taken refuge. There he gradually begins to re-enact with Flavières the events that have caused his mental dissolution. As they talk, the source of his madness, the appropriately named Madeleine, rises spectrally from a closed. coffinlike bath. It's a splendid coup de theatre, evocatively accompanied by Jon Nicholls' haunting widescreen music.
