Synopsis:

George Selwyn, barrister, has a passion for miniatures painted by a contemporary of Goya - Cosway. A fact known by an ex-employee Morgan. Selwyn's temporary secretary, Billie, tells him that a Cosway is about to come up at an auction. It is a disputed painting with many experts believing it was actually by Goya. She says that she can negotiate with the seller to purchase it before it comes to auction. He gives her a letter of authority. However, she is in league with Morgan and the painting was in fact stolen property. After Selwyn has purchased the miniature they try to blackmail him using the letter as proof that he knew the picture was stolen. He is told to go to Billie's flat with the money which he does. Having paid up he then finds that he is to be held prisoner at the flat all night so that the pair can blackmail him again this time for staying all night at a flat owned by a young lady. Morgan leaves and Selwyn manages to knock out Billie and leave. Next day the police arrive at Selwyn's office - one of his employees has been found murdered.

Synopsis:

Dr Colin Mayle comes to police attention because of the large quantities of morphine he has been prescribing. Mayle is being blackmailed into supplying it by the father of a woman that he had had an affair with - Jo. Mayle's wife, Elizabeth, knows about the affair. The dispensary is burgled and only morphine is stolen. The police think that Mayle rigged the burglary to hide how much he had in stock. Then Jo dies in a car crash. The police suspect Mayle of involvement. However, it turns out that Jo's father had burgled the dispensary and stolen the morphine because he thought that with the police interest it might be more difficult for him to get his hands on the drug he needed. He hid it around his house. Jo a diabetic mistook the morphine for insulin and injected herself before driving off.
