Notes: | Pulitzer Prize play
Synopsis: | Set in the Midwest circa 1920, Miss Lulu Bett is the story of a spinster who is little more than a servant living in her sister's home. Lulu Bett's dreary life is interrupted from a visit by the wayward brother of her brother-in law who takes a fancy to her. His desire to take Lulu out of her circumstances is realized when, as a lark, he asks her to marry him and she inadvertently does as a result of an arcane marriage law from the period. Deciding that they like the idea, the two go off together, until her new husband tells Lulu that he is still married to a woman who disappeared years before. Dejected, she returns home to face the scrutiny of her family, but her reaction to their harshness compels her to finally make a serious choice.
