Synopsis:

Trying to unravel Nation-space is a little like attempting to figure out exactly who shot President Kennedy - the path is simply too confusing to reach any concrete conclusions. At times the trail left by this promenade performance in a disused warehouse grew as cold as the building itself and we were left pondering the abrupt and constant changes in theatrical language and narrative. At other moments the threads appeared close to converging into some kind of bizarre sense. But this confusion seemed appropriate for a group-devised performance that asked questions about the elusive nature of Scottish identity and what happens when the past and present collide. Over one hour and 40 minutes, the Glasgow-based Flexible Deadlock company conjured up Thomas the Rhymer, the figure of folk legend gifted with second sight. His fruitless job is to spin yarns and shed light on Scottishness. But he is out of place in contemporary Scotland. The four performers shifted from playing spectres of the past and mythic characters to bitter neighbours, pub philosophers and their real selves. Such constant change was hard to grapple with. The company did however employ clever use of minimal props, lighting and menacing music with effective ritualistic movement.
Mark Waddell, Scotsman
