Synopsis: | A middle-aged artist returns to the city of his youth after twenty years of travel, only to discover that a fundamentalist religious reformer has taken control of the city. But his friend, a politician in the municipal government, convinces him that all will return to normal soon and that the city council will award him a commission. The artist stays and is soon embroiled in a violent struggle that threatens to expose the artist's deepest secret. In the end, their struggle has tragic, and fatal, consequences. Now imagine that the three men in conflict are Leonardo da Vinci, Niccolo Machiavelli and Girolamo Savonarola - three of the most interesting and influential men in history. This story of their struggle explores the conflicts between art, science, religion and politics. It raises questions about censorship and whether people of vision can ever comfortably align themselves with government interests. | |||||
