Martin Duberman was born on August 6th 1930 in New York City. His father was a Jewish Ukrainian immigrant who worked in the garment industry. He went to Yale and Harvard. He went on to teach history at both Yale and Princeton. He is the author of a number of academic history books including one on Charles Adams. "In White America" was his first stage play and was an international hit. It draws on documents from two hundred years of the suffering of Black Americans. He later went on to write plays that were not based on historical documents. These were collected together in the book "Male Amor". They were not commercial success at the time dealing with androgyny and homosexuality. Duberman had become dissolution with Princeton, he felt that he did not fit in there and his suggestions for some reforms were rejected. He took a job at a New York City college - so that he could be nearer to the theatre district. Whilst at Yale he had realised that he was gay - but this filled him with self loathing. Whilst trying to pass himself off as a heterosexual young man he was cruising the parks and the bath houses. He underwent psychotherapy to be cured. In 1970 he stopped the therapy and threw himself into the burgeoning gay rights scene. He was part of the National Gay Task Force and was a founder of the Gay Academic Union. He wrote the definitive book on the Stonewall riots and edited "Hidden From History: Reclaiming The Gay And Lesbian Past"
