Genre: | romantic drama One Act
| Parts: | Male | 2 | Female | 2 | ||
Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | The play can be performed on a bare stage. Very few technical requirements. This 30-minute love story is character-driven, and offers four meaty roles. Like the leading male character steeped in 19th century Russian literature, the play is nuanced and to a degree is reminiscent of 19th century Russian plays.
Synopsis: | The play is set in 1989 and in 2009. A middle-aged professor of Russian literature and deeply rooted in 19th century values becomes infatuated with a young high-school graduate. He kisses her only once, never has sex with her, but firmly believes that he has been unfaithful to his wife. Twenty years later, the young girl, now a grown woman and a lonely widow, sends a letter to the professor, inviting him and his wife to the bed and breakfast she owns and manages in Vermont. The professor's wife, terminally ill and prone to jealousy, reads the letter before her husband can, becomes irrationally jealous, and intercepts the letter. The consequences are tragic for the wife, but the professor and his son, after a long estrangement, come to reconciliation and a better understanding of human nature.
