Robert was born on March 22nd 1943 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was a composer, playwright and theatre critic. He set poems by Gertrude Stein, Walter de la Mare and Emily Dickinson to music. He moved to San Francisco in 1976 to become the theatre critic of the San Francisco Bay Guardian. He died of an AIDS related illness at the age of 47. There is a yearly award for gay/lesbian playwrighting named after him
