Charman was born on the 5 June 1979 in Crawley, West Sussex. Twenty-five year old Matt was washing cars at a crash repair shop when he wrote his first play, A Night at the Dogs. The play was directed by Abigail Morris and produced at Soho Theatre from 8 April 14 May 2005. Charman was previously Pearson Writer in Residence at the National Theatre and is a recipient of the Peggy Ramsay Award. The Observer won the 2008 Catherine Johnson Award for Best Play. Charman is currently writing two screenplays for Universal/Working Title Films as well as an original drama series for the BBC.
