Synopsis: | Yangtze Repertory Theatre presents a modern theater version of The Chalk Circle, a Yuan dynasty masterpiece by Li QianFu, adapted and directed by Joanna Chan employing Chinese Opera elements. The Chalk Circle is the saga of a beautiful girl named Begonia Zhang, who is sold into a house of prostitution by her impoverished family after her father's death. There she is befriended by Official Ma, a wealthy and childless tax collector, who takes her into his house as his concubine. She bears him a son, Shou Lang, but earns the jealousy of his wife, Mistress Ma. Aiming to remove Begonia as a threat of inheriting the Ma Familys fortune, she accuses Begonia of adultery and poisons Official Ma. She then blames Begonia for the crime and claims to a court that Shou Lang is her own child. As Begonia is about to be executed, she is rescued by Judge Bao, who discovers Mistress Ma's deception with a wisdom worthy of King Solomon. The play will be performed in English, Mandarin and Cantonese with Chinese and English supertitles. | |||||

Aboard The Empress of China was the historical figure Samuel Shaw, a Revolutionary War officer, businessman, and diplomat. Playwright Joanna Chan creates a relationship between Shaw and Purple Lotus, a fictional character of great beauty and charm, who captures the American's heart. Through their relationship the play explores the profound differences in the way the central characters and their two societies viewed the world and their places in it. All this takes place as the Americans, fresh from their own revolution, are desperately trying to establish trade with China. The play offers historical insights into the Chinese ways and American efforts to establish the new country's place in the world. Synopsis: | Forbidden City West is an original musical on 100 years of Chinese-American experience through the life and times of legendary entertainer Jadin Wong. In 1940, she was featured in Life magazine as the exotic star of the night club, The Forbidden City, in San Francisco. And into her 90s, she still headed her own talent agency for Asian performing artists in upper Manhattan. Married to the Broadway producer Eddie Dowling in the 1960s, Wong was dubbed 'the most photographed Chinese girl in the U.S.', her black and white photos with such Hollywood luminaries as Welles, Crosby, Powell, Hope, etc. graced numerous pages. Wong helped to create and popularize the 'dragon lady' image of the Chinese female in a long, tight gown, slits thigh-high, and chopsticks in her hair-an image that became a fixation in the public imagination in the West. Wong's colorful life includes: jumping off a small military plane over the Black Forest, being found and brought to safety a few hours later, then going on stage to entertain 2,000 American G.I.s in Austria; running away from home at age 14 to take dancing lessons; creating the 'dragon lady' image with the aid of her English dance teacher; and trying to restart her career as a stand-up comic. The fiesty young woman proved to be a peerless survivor, outlasting three husbands and braving the male-orientated Chinese community that condemned and ignored her, continuing to dispense advice today to scores of young Asian actors who are gradually gaining visibility. Synopsis: | The play is a martial arts epic with a fighting/kicking ensemble of 18 actors playing 26 speaking parts. It is based on a story about friendship and love, deception and betrayal, ambition and lust for power which was originally titled Xiao Ao Jiang Hu when it was published in 1967, and has been variously translated as "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer" and "State of Divinity." In the story, various parties are vying to recover a scroll that contains a powerful martial arts technique that can propel the owner to premiere leadership, but are eventually outdone by a young lad, Little Fox, who is devoid of all ambitions.
