Barry wrote his first play, "Rugs, Chairs, Tables" in 1990 and produced it at the Artists Company Theatre in New Orleans. From that time on his first artistic love has been writing for the state. Between 1996 and 2002 he was commissioned by the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults to write one act plays about issues facing teens - eating disorders, acquaintence rape and teen dating violence. His comedy "Hit and Miss" won the Tennessee Stage Company's Playwriting Contest in 2000, and in 2003 his play "Dead Towns of Alabama" was work shopped at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and scenes from it were read as part of ASF's Festival of New Plays. Since that time he has won the Southern Playwrights Competition 3 times (2005, 2009, 2011) and in 2009 was commissioned to write "The Face in the Courthouse Window" which is produced annually in Carrollton, Alabama. His day job is being the director of the Tangipahoa Parish Library in Louisiana.

Synopsis: | Conquistadors is the story of a weak-minded middle-aged graduate student named Will, who is confronted with the loss of his wife to a millworker with a violent temper. As Will struggles to decide whether to give up his wife or fight for her, he imagines a conversation with conquistador Hernando de Soto, about whom he is completing his thesis. De Soto himself enters the picture and, citing his triumphs over the native people of South America, supports a position of action by all means. At the heart of the play is the issue of control. Those who can't control themselves feel they must control those around them. Just as the conquistadors sought to dominate and control native people, some people today seek to dominate or control others because of inner powerlessness and fear. This is particularly true in cases of the abuse of women and children. A related question -- Is violence ever justified? -- is also raised by the play. | |||||

Synopsis: | On January 30, 1878, as storm clouds grew and rain began to pour Henry Wells, a former slave accused of arson and burglary, was looking down from the garret window of the newly rebuilt Pickens County Alabama Courthouse at a mob bent on lynching him. In a flash, a bolt of lightning struck a nearby tree and arced across to the Courthouse where Wells was standing, etching his anguished features in the window pane. That image is still there today. This is the story of a black man struggling to make his mark in the world, the sheriff who tried to protect him, and the townspeople who sought to take his life. Based on a true story. | |||||

Synopsis: | Willie and Heimie are two failed New Orleans bank robbers who decide there's more money in being hit men. Their first job is to knock off "someone big." Thinking it's a senator or important businessman they discover to their horror that it is Angelo, a BIG (6'6") mobster. But their luck holds and Angelo has a heart attack just as he's about to kill them. Synopsis: | In June, 1963 a young white preacher named Randall Cobb arrives in his father's hometown of Wynton, Alabama to pastor his first church. He is steeped in Southern lore and tradition, stories of the golden age of the South and nostalgia for the past. Things could not be better. But then he meets a black man named Asa and his grandson Arthur and hears another side to the history he was taught. Asa believes a black man should keep his head down and survive, but Arthur wants to fight back against racism and challenge the status quo.
