Notes: | based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer
Synopsis: | The play takes the form of a quest. Jonathan, a young New York Jew representing the author, comes to rural Ukraine on a single-minded mission: to find the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis. He is accompanied by an interpreter, Alex, who speaks pedantically correct English, and by Alex's own grandfather who acts as their surly, recalcitrant driver. Much of the first half consists of comic cultural conflict as American eagerness meets Ukrainian obstinacy. But, in the second half as the trio reach their destination, the action shifts towards the uncovering of wartime guilt and shame. What emerges in Block's version is the cathartic nature of the pilgrimage. Jonathan sets out to discover his own family past. In the process he unearths an even more dramatic story: one that involves Alex's grandfather, his relationship with a Jewish friend, the moral choices people face during wartime occupation. "I am a good person who lived in a bad time," the old man protests. But Foer's point is that past actions have present consequences and that both individuals and nations need to confront their stained history.
