| The Rudman family between 1948 and 1969. During the wake for Betty's husband a police inspector arrives to arrest her brother Benson. Benson has been seeing a 17 year old John and his parents have filed a complaint. Benson persuades the police officer to return after the wake. But in the meantime he hangs himself in the cellar where he is found by one of his young nephews. Louis wants his two sons to become doctors. David is now at college - but his father tells him that he can no longer afford to pay for him and that he should marry his rich girl friend. Which he does. Phillip the other brother rebels and pursues artistic endeavors. David's marriage is not a success - he is knocking his wife about. Philip is leaving for France and his father does his best to prevent it. | |||||
