Julian Beck was born on May 31st 1935. His parents were Irving Beck a businessman and Mabel Beck a teacher. He dropped out of Yale to pursue a writing career. In 1943 he met Judith Malina they became life partners. They founded the Living Theatre in 1947. In 1974 they were prosecuted by the Internal Revue for non payment of $23,000 in taxes and defended themselves but were found guilty. The Revenue shut down the Living Theatre so they moved from New York. Over the years Julian was indicted on numerous charges ranging from being drunk and disorderly to indecent exposure. He was even arrested for not participating in a Civil Defence drill. He was bisexual and had a long term affair with the actor Ilion Troya and both he and Judith had a long term relationship with a bisexual shipyard worker - Lester Schwartz. In 1983 he was diagnosed as having stomach cancer and died on September 14th 1985 in New York's Mount Sinai Hospital.
