SARA BARKER

Nationality:   Canadian    Email:   n/a   Website:   n/a

Literary Agent:  Playwrights Guild of Canada

Sara Barker is the Artistic Director of Theatre CounterClockwise which was founded in 1995. From 1976-1995 she was Artistic Codirector of The Whole Loaf Theatre and wrote all the original shows for that company up to 1994. From 1970-1975 she worked with the Vancouver Street Theatre and Breadbaker's Theatre. She has written more than fifteen plays and pageants which have been produced and toured to audiences through Canada, New England, Western Europe, and the Soviet Union. Her work is characterized by a strong narrative voice which echoes elements of old popular fairground forms of theatre and makes possible a mediation between the performance and the audience in non "theatre" settings. Her most recent efforts are attempts to explore and extend the subversive and comic possibilities of this narrative voice in theatre.

Kate cannot sleep. She is stranded in the middle of the night, in the middle of her life. A Dead Man, charming and dangerous, lies on her bed. A Slave, born out of a few bloody verses of the Odyssey, sits at Kate's desk and writes in Kate's diary where Kate has erased everything. A Fish delivers a package with a warning. It's the perfect set-up! Narratives collide in the night as the Narrator desperately strives for coherence.
