Anthony Akerman was born in South Africa on August 12, 1949, lived in Holland as an exile during the Apartheid regime and returned to his own country around 1990. Since then several of his plays have been produced there. During his stay in Holland, he worked as a playwright, director and dramaturg or literary manager. Both organizations are no longer in existence. Another play of his, A MAN OUT OF THE COUNTRY, was first performed on November 8 1989 at FRASCATI in Amsterdam, again directed by the author himself. In this case a playtext was published by Frascati in association with the defunct theatre magazine ALLIGATOR.His adaptation of Horace McCoy's novel THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? for the RO THEATER in Rotterdam didn't survive the previewing stage in September 1988. Mr. Akerman has worked extensively for South African radio and television.
